Welcome to Day 1 of our 5 for 5 Halloween event! This is where 5 designers create 5 Halloween projects over the next 5 days... with a new theme each day. Today's theme is PAINT so we were challenged to use paint paint and more paint in our projects.
I'm so excited to share this project today! I finally altered a clock (I've been wanting to for years!) and I just love the outcome.
It's not enough to say that I love it! And I'm officially hooked on creating altered clocks :) It's already found a spot on my fireplace mantle :)
Here are a few steps on how I created my Wicked clock...
The first and most important step is to GESSO the entire clock! Gesso will allow the paint to stick without peeling off the metal. I painted the outside of the clock with Distress Paint in Hickory Smoke. The inside of the clock was painted with Distress Paint in Twisted Citron.
I then decoupaged the inside back with some DCWV - Spooky Delight paper and smeared on some more Twisted Citron to help it blend better.
Next step... I got a little carried away with some Mica Flakes! I wanted to make the back look like a starry night sky. The mica flakes add cool texture and also a subtle shine.
I added the moon from Tim Holtz's "Frightful" ephemera pack and some star sequins throughout the back. I think the key to the altered clocks is to LAYER and work from the back to the front!
Annnnnnd then this is the point where I got carried away and forgot to take more photos of the process!
Easily my favorite part of the clock is the super spooky trick-or-treater. Google 'vintage halloween' and browse the image section... there are all sorts of awesome pictures of vintage costumes! I printed this one out of photo paper and added some color with Distress Paint in Dried Marigold. You can also see I added some streaks of Dried Marigold paint to the outside of the clock, the moon, and my skulls.
The bottom inside of the clock has a layer of black spider web cotton stuff you can find at craft stores. I added a little skeleton and pumpkin from the 'Frightful' ephemera pack to the back. The little skulls I found from Target :)
To finish it off, I hot glued some black lace ribbon (from May Arts) around the edge. I painted the 'Wicked' in Antique Linen and Twisted Citron Distress Paints and also added the 'fright' charm hanging off the top.
Thanks for stopping in for Day 1 of our Halloween event! Make sure to stop back tomorrow for more spooky inspiration!
