Obsessed: Tiny Houses

Can we talk about my newest obsession for a quick minute? I am going crazy over this new craze of "Tiny Houses". Have you seen them? On the outside they look like a cabin on wheels, or a child's dream doll house. But a peek into the inside shows a fully functioning home complete with kitchen, bathroom, sleeping loft, and sitting area. I think they're dreamily amazing...

These houses are often considered "off the grid", meaning they are completely self containing homes. Whether they use solar energy or a natural water supply, however they do it, it's very very "green" living at its finest. And all that at just a couple hundred square feet.

The idea of living well in a tight space is so appealing to me. Even if you're not into living in a fully self-sustained cabin on wheels, this is a great way to explore our use of wasted space in our homes. I'm thinking all those New York City apartments selling for $350k for 300 square feet of space. The floor plans of a tiny house really make you at least think about using space a little more wisely.

A tiny house on a lake would be my absolute fantasy come true. A place of my own, mortgage free, with the most peaceful view in the world. A little retreat I could escape to whenever I wanted. I don't think it could be any better! However, I know this would be a true struggle for me. I know what you're thinking: ummm, Rach... where would your craft room be? Where would you keep all your gorgeous kate spade handbags?! And that's the challenge. I like my things and I really should look into being less selfish. Learning that I don't need that extra room for stuff and things, I only need the space to live with the family I love.

It's worth the thought, if nothing else.

Do you think you could live in a tiny house? You and your closest partner in a 200 square foot abode? Getting rid of all your 'things' and only truly living on those things you needed?

  1. I also read all about living in the small quarters lately! Sometimes I think I would love to give this a try...as of now, I am still living in a large house (very spoiled living in North America) and don't plan to move any time soon. BUT a little house near the lake sounds idyllic and dreamy!

  2. I love tiny houses too!!! The idea of intelligent design and living without so much waste is such a draw for me. People will ooh and ahh over huge mansions, but I'm always the one pointing out the pretty little bungalow on the gorgeous property next to a pristine river or lake...it would be a dream come true for me to live this way. Maybe we'll be neighbors someday! We should SOOO have a huge mansion sized crafty space though...just sayin' ;)
